The Rainbow Valley is located in the basin of the Rio Grande, about 90 kms from San Pedro de Atacama. The access road must be joined on the route to Calama. The valley, like the rest of the attractions of San Pedro de Atacama and its surroundings, is well above 3000 meters above sea level.
The buildings of Rio Grande are characterized by being built in stone, with thatched roofs and mud.
The Valley of the rainbow owes its name to the great variety of tonalities that can be observed in the hills of the valley; earthy colors, reddish, beige, green, white, yellow, combined with white salts and blue sky, as well as combining in strange formations. The colors show the great wealth and different concentrations of clay, salts and minerals.
On the other hand, there are also interesting rock formations produced by erosion.
Through the Valley you can see strong shades of green, by natural species that develop around the waters that circulate around the place.
While it is not necessary to have a 4×4 vehicle, it is recommended to use high vehicles, such as vans or jeeps, especially to ford the river and up to Rio Grande, where the road is steep and loose gravel.
For drivers on their own, it is advisable to bring water and meals due to the inexistence or lack of stores or restaurants in the place.
